The Daylight World

My mom is keeping my two-year-old niece, so I spent the night at her house, yesterday. This morning my niece woke me, so I watched so that my mom could sleep in. I tried to get her to watch Fantasia, but she didn’t like it and we ended up watching Clifford the Big Red Dog while she ate cereal.

I went grocery shopping for my mom and by the time I came back they were both asleep, so I went to Meshugga Coffeehouse for a while. I was a regular there when I lived on the north side, but haven’t been there much since I moved. It’s a great place to people watch. Where else can you run into a Republican presidential candidate, a Middle East peace activist, see a grown woman in a Catholic school-girl uniform and eavesdrop on a conversation about the works of D.T. Suzuki all inside of two hours?

Actually waking up before noon and getting out into the world makes me feel like a human and a part of society rather than a mechanism that just works, eats and sleeps.
