Five minutes ago… in South City

So I stop at 7-11 on my way home. There’s this Rage Against the Machine song playing on the radio so I sit in my car on the parking lot and listen to it. In the corner of my eye I see what looks like a car about to plow into me. I look up and this car is going way too fast as it swerves into the space between me and another parked car. Once the car stops I’m looking at this really good-looking girl who flashing me this kinda freaked out smile like she’s apologizing for the driver and happy we didn’t crash.

She gets out and walks past my car to go into 7-11. Just then the song ends and I realize that if I get out of my car now it will look like I’m following her, but fuck it, I do it anyway. As soon as I get out, her boyfriend, the driver rolls down the window and calls to me.

“Hey man, can you do me a favor.” I stop and look at him. He’s drunk off his ass, “Can you do me a favor. You see that dude in there, he be straight tripping, know what I mean?” I have no idea what he means.”You see that girl in there, the real cute girl,” he says. I nod. “She be flippin’ on me like I don’t care about her or something. Just do me a favor, man, look out for nigga. Just hook a nigga up, knawmean.”

With this, I stare at him for a beat and without saying a word I walk into the store and buy some ice cream. Now, for a free two egg breakfast with bacon, can you guess the race of the driver?

If you said white, meet me at South City Diner any Friday or Saturday after midnight and claim your prize.

  1. Yeah, he had to be at least in his twenties. Plus, his car was way better than mine, all tricked out with rims.
I love South City white people, they’re just as entertaining as North St. Louis black people, but they don’t make me feel ashamed of my race.
