St. Louis Poetry Slam – This week it’s Kevin free!

I have been asked by Kevin McCameron to guest host the St. Louis Poetry Slam in his absence the week. I know what you’re thinking… this could be a trap. That’s why I need impartial witnesses.

The Slam takes place upstairs at Dressel’s Pub, 419 N. Euclid Ave. in the Central West End this Wednesday at 9PM. There’s a $5 cover, $50 of which goes to the winning poet. So come and share your verse or just to watch me make a jerk out of myself.

I was considering making a joke about ‘short African-American mail’, but I couldn’t think of a joke that didn’t make me sound like a racist asshole.
(Which isn’t to say that I’m not a racist asshole, just that I don’t want to sound like one.)

Just don’t forget to elongate every poet’s name for several seconds and to repeat any joke that gets a laugh several times until it’s dead. You’ll do great.

  3. Excellent Hosting
I just wanted to drop you a few words of appreciation for your energy and honesty in hosting the slam. When you instructed us to never make excuses, don’t go into “I wrote this for blah blah blah,” etc. it was wonderful and poignant. I felt like you gave people a good sense of what is expected of a slam poet, and I thank you for that. And the poetry shit you spit was fucking incredible man, truly. Peace.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, he is still a friend, but Kevin is a thief, liar, abusive and a molester, need I say more?

  5. In Kevin’s defense
Back in the day when everyone thought Kevin was harmless, I got looked like I was crazy when I warned people about him.
Since I was ahead of the curve as a Kevin basher, allow me to be ahead of the curve as a Kevin defender.
First, Kevin was instumenatal in the decision to ask me to come back and host the Slam. Given our history, that’s a big gesture on his part. The Slam means so much to me, it’s quite humbling being given this gift by someone I’m not exactly friends with.
Second, if not for Kevin I wouldn’t have a Slam to host. When Robyn died I fell apart and was content to let the Slam fall apart as well. One by one, all the organizers of the Blueberry Hill Slam opted out except for Kevin.
Third, Kevin has grown up a lot in the years he and I have been out of communication. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying he’s a swell guy all of a sudden, but I give him his credit.
Me, Kevin and Mike had a very good conversation last night in which I pulled no punches. I told Kevin that I think he’s a sociopath. I told him that I don’t really like him, but I can work with him.
He’s grown up a lot, but he’s burned a lot of people hard enough that they’ll never get close enough to him to see that. Sometimes I think he understands this, other times not. But, that’s his cross to bear.

  6. i feel bad for missing the slam you hosted…..i really wanted to be there but was feeling under the weather.
the words you spoke in defense of Kevin were HUGE and i have nothing but respect for you….for putting them out there.
hope to see you at one of the slams in the future.

  7. Re: In Kevin’s defense
I am amazed that Count Draga has so many false accusations to throw on our Slam Master. A) It is thanks to Kevin that we were able to show case Draga’s work in Intermission Magazine. B) Thief? I’ve known him for 12 years and he’s never stolen anything from me. C) Molester? This must be a reference to 16 yr. old Sara whose own mother used to drive her in from Farmington so she could spend the weekend with Kevin. Draga wants to believe anything that comes out of a woman’s mouth (Annie Miller, 1998) and often the more damaging the rumor, the more emphatic he is to spread it. D) Get over the fact that Kevin had a long term relationship with Mallarie Zimmer. She loved him, and that’s that. I appreciate and love Michael Draga, but I’ve been at the butt of too many of his false rumors myself. Credibility issue? Definately. thewordengine.

Wraith, you are a very talented host. Sorry about these anonymous postings. I don’t understand how to register to the site. I live in Soulard if anyone would like to sign me up as a livejournal user. thewordengine
