Slamming for Human Rights (thank God it’s over)

Me and Big Poppa E. In retrospect, this picture may not have been a good idea.

Funny story: A couple weeks ago I went to a poetry reading at Cummel’s put on by this guy Travis, but when I got there, the place was closed . Travis posted on his myspace how Cummel’s forgot he’d booked the space. He showed up for his show and the doors were locked and no on was there . This lead me to call Cummel’s on Thursday and discover that they had completely forgotten that I had booked them for Slamming for Human Rights and were planning to close at 8pm that Saturday. Luckily I talked them out of it.

I’m so fucking happy the show is over. I feel like this huge weight has been lifted off me. I was petrified that no one was gonna show, but we packed the joint. People sat on the floor, people sat in the hallway. I was so relieved.

Some of the tightest poets in the city came out: Mama Blue, Chris Lok, Stephanie Williams. Julie Bruggeman, came out. I haven’t seen that girl touch a mic in like, five years. Marcel muthafuckin Toussaint was in the house. Haven’t seen that guy in seven years. We had a conversation in French. I have no idea what the fuck either of us said. I just hope we’re not married under French law or something.

Of course, Big Poppa E held it down. I’ve seen him compete in slams and I’ve seen him feature, but I had never seen him host an entire show. He freaked it. The crowd was in love with him.

  1. Thanks, dear.
I saw your moms at the U.City slam. She was all like “I’m Tabitha’s mother.”
And I was all like “I know who you are, biiiyatch.”
(For the record, I did not call your mother a biiiyaatch.)

  2. She sometimes forgets her name is Melissa.
i think it’s a reflex. at some point in her life, she decided that i was her greatest accomplishment… (which I don’t think is true) we didn’t start having problems until she decided that she was dammed it she was going to let me fuck that up by making my own decisions.
